Greek police on Wednesday arrested fifty-nine people suspected of being involved in an international gold-smuggling operation. All the suspects were rounded up from the greater Athens area.
After a long investigation, police believe that the suspects were stealing gold items and other precious metals from pawnshops around Greece before melting them down. They would then turn them into nearly-untraceable gold bars, which were then smuggled abroad.
Among those arrested was well-known Greek pawnbroker Richardos Mylonas who also sells jewelry through a telemarketing operation aired on a private TV station.
