Nearly 60 percent of the women who are victims of violence in Cyprus don’t report the incident to anyone, according to the shocking results of a study conducted on the island. The study was the first ever undertaken in Cyprus on the subject of domestic violence against women.
The Advisory Committee on Prevention and Combating Violence in the Family, based on Cyprus, is reminding people this week that November 25 was the international Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It also marks the beginning of a two-week period focusing on the global issue of violence against women.
The group stresses that violence against women continues to be one of the most widespread violations of human rights internationally.
The November 25th commemoration was established by a 1999 U.N. resolution marking the beginning of a period devoted to worldwide awareness of domestic and other violence against women. The UN campaign runs for two weeks every year, culminating in the UN Human Rights Day on December 10th.
The E.U. based Association for the Prevention and Handling for Violence in the Family states that ”abuse is a repetitive pattern of behaviors to maintain power and control over an intimate partner. These are behaviors that physically harm, arouse fear, prevent a partner from doing what they wish or force them to behave in ways they do not want.”
Statistics show this is far from being an isolated social phenomenon, as a majority of households, not only in Cyprus but globally, experience some form of domestic abuse.
Domestic violence and other violence against women can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation. Studies show it can even occur regardless of one’s marital status or educational and socioeconomic background.
The Cyprus study was conducted in 2012 on behalf of the Advisory Committee on Prevention and Combating Violence in the Family.
It is a matter that can affect anyone at any time and this is the reason why the victims of domestic violence must speak out.
