Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, on the island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, has been voted “Best in the World” by travel site FlightNetwork.
The travel website runs an annual competition for the ten best beaches in the world, with the spectacular Greek beach featuring at the very top, scoring 10 out of 10.
And it’s no wonder. Navagio Beach is located in a secluded cove, surrounded on three sides by towering white cliffs. Its beautiful turquoise water mesmerizes the eye. Another picturesque touch is the historic shipwreck just off the famed beach.
According to FlightNetwork, Shipwreck Beach scored eight out of 10 for its remoteness, sand and water quality.
The remote beach got its new name in October 1980, when a huge storm forced the ship “Panagiotis” to run aground there. Prior to that time, the beach had been known as Agios Georgios.
It was rumored that the ship was smuggling contraband cigarettes and alcohol when it ran aground. The ship was abandoned, and the captain and some crew members were arrested. They were later cleared of all smuggling charges by the court.
At the time, locals feared that the shipwreck would ruin the reputation of the beach and the island itself. But little did they know. The shipwreck has since been visited by millions, and photographed by just as many.
Unfortunately, on September 13, 2018, a landslide from the shorter cliff at the back of the beach injured at least three people, forcing authorities to close the beach for a time.
It has now been reopened and is safe for beachgoers — in plenty of time for another round of sunbathers to visit the idyllic beach in the summer of 2019.
