The European Commissioner for Migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, said on Tuesday that the Greek islands are better prepared to host migrants this winter in comparison to previous years.
However, there is still opportunity for improvement, he said when asked about the prevailing conditions in the hotspots on the islands of Lesvos and Samos.
Avramopoulos  said that The European Commission has sent clear messages on how conditions can be improved and is offering full support to the Greek authorities.
“We do not want to experience again situations such as those we saw during the harsh winter two years ago. I want to believe that all sides are better prepared but, of course, there is still room for improvement” he stated.
Avramopoulos is a Greek politician of the conservative New Democracy party and former career diplomat. He is currently serving as the EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship.
