The US State Department described the recent Russian claim that the United States plans to militarize the island of Cyprus as “absurd”, answering to Greek correspondents in Washington on Thursday, according to the state-run AMNA.
Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry said this week that any further militarization of Cyprus on behalf of the US will have serious and dangerous implications for the island Republic.
The US State Department claimed that Russia is distorting reality, noting that the recent non-binding statement of intent between the Republic of Cyprus and the US is not an effort to further militarize Cyprus.
The U.S. says it is an expression of a common will to deepen the two countries’ relations across a wide spectrum of areas such as counter-terrorism, disaster response, cyber-security, and efforts to stop money laundering.
