Greek Architects Design "Smart" Hotel Room of the Future

A new “smart” hotel room “perceives the guest’s needs and desires, and modifies its elements accordingly,” says Sofia Mavroudi, a member of the Omada Meletis designer group.
Mavroudi spoke about the groundbreaking new design in an interview with the Athens-Macedonia News Agency (AMNA). The Mapping Parametric Project (MaPPa) is the official name of the prototype room.
It was entered into a competition sponsored by the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), which invited architects to design and construct a model DIGI smart hotel. The room is now on display at the Fifth Annual Athens International Tourism Expo.
Following its selection by the TEE committee, team members Ourania Andreopoulou, Thomas Giatzides, Sofia Mavroudi, Ioannis Rousogiannakis and Eleftherios Paliearakis presented their vision, which visitors of the Expo had the chance to share through projections, preformances and virtual reality scenes.
The room “is defined through the design of two surfaces, the ceiling and the floor, which can be modified to define its limits, possibilities and experiences within the space, with a different geometry each time,” Mavroudi told ANA.
The floor’s height can be easily adjusted, while the ceiling can be extended to accommodate different uses of the room, she added.
The kitchen and bathroom are stable areas, in which not much is variable, while the rest of the room I can be configured through spaces and curves that “accommodate the processes of sleep, eating, relaxing and bathing,” Mavroudi said.
The roof was designed as a “parametric” surface, made from movable, camera shutter-like panels which contract during the night and open up in the daytime in order to optimize the guests’ connection with the landscape.
“Hotel visitors can now control various functions of their rooms such as lighting, temperature and music. What is innovative about this project is that the room itself is in a position to perceive the guest’s needs and adapt to them,” Mavroudi said.
The project was executed with the support of the Transformative Intelligent Environments Laboratory of the Technical University of Crete, which is headed by Konstantinos Oungrinis. Researchers Sotiris Ntzoufras, Akis Georgakopoulos, Stratos Georgoulakis, Marios Christoulakis and Iasonas Paterakis also contributed to the unique new design.
