Rare Chance for a White Christmas in Athens

Snow in Athens during Christmas is certainly not impossible, though rare

A white Christmas this year in Athens? It could happen. The National Observatory of Athens has just published new meteorological data about the times Athens experienced white Christmases.
Its findings show that despite being a rare phenomenon, Athenians could definitely once again experience a truly white Christmas, especially considering a trend of increased snowfall nationwide so far in 2018.
According to the Athens Observatory’s records, which began back in the early 20th century, the city has been covered in snow only twice on December 25th, in 1949 and again in 1968.
The Greek capital recorded two more incidents of snow on Christmas eve, in 1962 and 1992, with only one Boxing Day being white, in 1991. However, this year has been an unexpectedly good year for those who love snow, as Athens has experienced eight different days of the white stuff, something extremely rare for a city which lies so far south.
According to Observatory data, the average number of days seeing snowfall in Athens during December is 0.4. That means chances are that Athens will see snow during the month of Christmas only once every two and a half years.
In contrast to Athens, the scenic northern Greek city of Florina enjoys an average of 5.9 days of snowfall during the same month, with the city lying covered in snow sometimes for weeks.
Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki, has a slightly higher chance than Athens for a white Christmas, averaging 1.2 days of snowfall during the month of December.
