Tsipras Says Attack Against Skai TV Targets Democracy

Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras condemned the bombing of Skai TV headquarters in the early hours of Monday, saying that it was an a attack against democracy.
“It was an attack by cowardly and dark forces against democracy itself,” the PM said in a press statement issued from his office.
He added that those responsible will not “achieve their goal to terrorize and confuse.”
The bomb outside Skai TV, which went off at approximately 2:30 AM (0030 GMT) caused extensive damage, shattering windows and damaging the facade of the building, but there were no injuries.
Skai TV is a fierce critic of the SYRIZA-led government, and the party had banned its members from appearing on Skai’s programs in protest against the network’s perceived bias.
In comments at the scene of the blast earlier in the day, Citizens’ Protection Minister Olga Gerovasili said the explosion was an “attack on democracy.”
“However, it serves to bolster democracy even more, not to threaten it,” stated Gerovasili who visited the site with Greek Police chief Aristeidis Andrikopoulos.
Main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who also visited the scene, said that “democracy and pluralism will not be silenced.”
He blamed the attack on the “toxic climate”, and appealed to all political forces to assume their responsibilities and put a stop to the current climate of political polarization, which only damages democracy.
