22 Bishops From Macedonia Denounce Prespa Agreement

Among the Bishops who signed the statement was the Bishop of Thessaloniki, Anthimos.

22 bishops from all over Macedonia signed a common statement with which they denounce the Agreement between the governments of Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), also known as Prespa Agreement.
The Bishops say that the Agreement opens the way for the recognition of an Autocephalous (independent) ”Macedonian” Church, something that won’t solve problems but will create a new area of tension and will provoke irredentism and enmity between the two nations.
Referring to the Greek members of the Parliament, especially those who come from Macedonia and are willing to vote in favor of the Agreement, the Bishops say that they will ”ruin their reputation once and for all”.
The local Church leaders also declared their support for student demonstrations that took place throughout the country against the Agreement.
