59 Migrants Rescued Off Greek Islands of Chios and Samos

A total of fifty-nine migrants were found and rescued from two different boats on Sunday morning in the Aegean Sea.
FRONTEX, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, located two boats, one off the coast of the island of Chios and the other off the coast of Samos.
During their operation, dubbed ”Poseidon 2018”, the European Coast Guard officers spotted a boat with 31 migrants east of Samos and 28 more southeast of Chios.
The migrants were safely transferred to the nearby islands in two separate operations.
Following the 2016 agreement between the E.U. and Turkey, the flow of migrants from Turkey to the Greek islands has been drastically reduced, leading some smugglers to find other ways to transfer migrants illegally to Greece.
