Athens Welcomes the New Year with Singing and Dancing (Video)

  • The Municipality of Athens welcomed the New Year at the Thisio Pedestrian Walkway with great music, dancing, and a shining star which lit up the Parthenon in the background.

“We Welcome the New Year with Angels Enlightening our Hearts” was the theme of the New Year’s Eve celebration. Athens Mayor Giorgos Kominis counted down the seconds until the New Year, bidding farewell to 2018 and welcoming the year 2019. The mayor warmly wished everyone health, happiness, and prosperity.
Popular Greek actor Vassilis Charalambopoulos, who served as the host for the festivities, opened the celebrations at 10:00 PM, as the Athens Symphony Orchestra presented a special music performance accompanied by stilt-walkers and circus entertainers.
Greek actor and singer Christina Maxouri then took the stage and performed until the end of the evening and into 2019.
Following the fireworks and the welcoming of the New Year, singer Katerina Kouka and composer Themis Karamouratidis performed a series of classic and modern Greek hit songs.
Then it was time for dancing. En Lefko 87.7 radio producer Harris Varzbatijan stepped on stage to get the crowd hyped with popular dance tunes, and the people of Athens danced until the first dawn of 2019.
