A government spokesperson in Berlin announced on Friday that German Chancellor Angela Merkel will pay an official visit to Athens on January 10 and 11, 2019.
Merkel’s spokesperson Martina Fietz said that the Chancellor will meet with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday afternoon. They are expected to make joint statements to the press after the meeting. The two leaders will discuss the bilateral relations as well as European and international issues.
On Friday, the Chancellor will meet with Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos. Later in the day, she will visit the German School of Athens and will meet with Greek artists, scientists and intellectuals as well as with representatives of German and Greek companies.
The German chancellor will also meet with the leader of the Greek main opposition New Democracy (ND) Party’s Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Replying to journalists’ questions on the Prespa Agreement, Fietz said that she does not know if the Chancellor will discuss this issue in Athens, but she stressed that the German government welcomes the agreement.
“Now we waiting for the changes in the Skopje Constitution and the ratification from Athens”, she said.
Questioned about Athens’ demand for World War II reparations, Fietz replied that Berlin’s stance on the matter was “known and unchanging,” and that the issue had been “resolved legally and politically.”
