The Greek island of Corfu was covered in snow on Friday as the “Sophia” weather system continues to keep the nation in its grip, bringing heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures to much of the country.

The Ionian island has not experienced such a heavy snowfall for at least 13 years, local residents say.

Heavy snow has also fallen on the mountainous areas of the islands of Cephalonia and Zakynthos.

According to the latest forecast by the National Observatory of Athens’ Meteo service, snow will continue to fall in all the prefectures of Macedonia, and in Ioannina, Trikala and Larissa. Tire chains are required on several roads.

Snow is also expected to fall again in Thessaloniki on Friday evening while flights to and Macedonia international airport in Thessaloniki are operating on a 15-minute delay.

“Sophia” has brought very low temperatures to the entire nation, as a mass of cold air from the north sweeps through the country. Temperatures will drop several degrees below zero Celsius overnight into Friday and Saturday, especially in central and northern Greece.

Rain and storms are also forecast for central and southern Greece, the Ionian and Aegean Seas and all their coastal areas.

Snowfall will be especially heavy in the areas of East Thessaly, Evia and northern sections of Central Greece.

Winds at sea will be particularly strong, measuring up to 9 on the Beaufort scale in the Aegean Sea, but they that will decrease gradually during the evening.
