Three Dead in Greece After Downpour Turns Creek Into Torrent

Rescue crews search for the two missing men on Saturday

Greece’s fire service discovered on Sunday the bodies of two men who had been missing since a downpour on Thursday. The bodies of both men were recovered from a creek southeast of Athens.
The two men, 67 and 64 years of age, along with the older man’s wife, had set out in their vehicle on Thursday from Keratea, a town about 45 kilometers (28 miles) southeast of Athens, in the pouring rain. The 64-year-old had volunteered to drive the couple to go shopping.
The creek suddenly turned into a raging river after the downpour.
On Saturday, the body of the woman, 66, was able to be recovered from the car, which was lodged in the creek. Authorities determined that she had drowned in the back seat.
The body of her husband was found on Sunday morning, 10 kilometers (6 miles) away from the car. The driver’s body was found soon afterward, 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the site of the car.
