State of Greek Democracy Worst in the EU, Says New Study

Greece currently ranks at the very bottom of all Western European nations for the health of its democracy, according to a survey from the U.K.’s Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
The nation of Greece was placed in the ignominious “flawed democracy” category in the EIU’s “Democracy Index”. Earning an overall score of 7.29 out of 10, the nation which brought democracy to the world is ranked only above Turkey.
The EIU’s democracy index measures the health of the democratic process in 167 countries all over the world, 166 of which are sovereign states and 164 are U.N. member states.
The index, first produced in 2006, is based on 60 indicators grouped in five different categories, which measure pluralism, the functioning of government, civil liberties and political culture.
In addition to a numeric score and a relative ranking, the index categorizes countries as having one of four “regime types”: full democracies, flawed democracies, hybrid regimes and authoritarian regimes.
Scandinavian countries, led by the nation of Norway, received the highest score for the health of their democratic processes.
