Teachers and riot police clashed in central Athens on Monday afternoon, following a protest against a new system of hiring educators which the Greek government announced recently.
The protest was organized by D.O.E. and O.L.M.E., the largest teachers’ unions in Greece, with thousands of teachers peacefully marching in central Athens on Monday at noontime.
However, when the teachers approached the Greek parliament building at Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, police tried to force the demonstrators back by using a large quantity of tear gas.
Some of the demonstrators attempted to hit police officers, and tensions ran high for several minutes.
Demonstrators dispersed soon after the teargas was used, without any further violence being reported.
