''Organized Plan To Invade Parliament'' Averted

The Speaker of the Greek Parliament, Nikolaos Voutsis, declared on Monday that extremists had hatched an organized plan to invade the Greek Parliament during Sunday’s demonstration at Syntagma Square.
Voutsis said evidence currently being held by the Parliamentary Guard proves that there was an organized plan drawn up by extremists, who battled police for at least two hours on the steps leading to the entrance of the building.
The plan involved the simultaneous invasion of the House of the Parliament from five different points of entry.
Speaking with the state-run AMNA news agency, the speaker claimed that he was an eye-witness of the operation himself.
Voutsis added that “what happened yesterday was a systematic effort by extreme groups to invade the Parliament. This effort went on for two hours, and we will all be astonished when we see the items collected after the attack against the riot police.”
Justifying the use of teargas, Voutsis said that the Parliamentary guards acted in a completely defensive manner, since ”they did not move from their position”.
Separating the organizers of the peaceful demonstration from those who initiated the clashes, Voutsis noted that “these incidents and these efforts have no relation with the main organizers, the speakers or the people who were at the rally.
“On the contrary, these attacks brought instability, and were dangerous for the people that participated in the rally” said the speaker. Police estimated that the number of total people attending the Syntagma Square demonstration to be 65,000. However, many participants believed the actual number was much higher, and drone footage shows the Square and nearby streets completely full of people.
