Turkish Defense Minister Invites Apostolakis to Turkey

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar has invited his new Greek counterpart Evangelos Apostolakis to visit Turkey, according to Turkey’s semi-official news agency Anadolu.
Akar emphasized the importance of “developing cooperation in the military field” and “good neighborly relations” in a letter of congratulations upon Apostolakis’ appointment. The Greek defense minister was recently named to the post after the resignation of Panos Kammenos, who left his position over the Prespa deal.
The Anadolu news agency hailed the initiative as an effort by Akar to reduce tension in the eastern Aegean and the Mediterranean, particularly as it comes on the anniversary of the 1996 Imia crisis. The Imia episode brought Greece and Turkey to the brink of war at the time.
