Greek Philanthropist Nikki Goulandris Dies at 93


Nikki Goulandris, a 93-year old Greek philanthropist and a botanical painter died on Saturday morning.
Goulandris was born in Greece in 1925 and throughout her life, she has helped illustrate several botanical books.
She was the vice-president of the famous Goulandris Natural History Museum and Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art.
She served in various public offices in the past. She was the former deputy minister for Social Services in the first Government of Konstantinos Karamanlis after the fall of the military Junta in 1974.
She was also an honorary deputy president of Hellenic Radio and Television (ERT) between 1975 and 1980, and a member of the World Commission on Culture and Development of UNESCO.
Goulandris had also been named ”Woman of Europe” by the European Commission and the European Parliament in 1991.
Goulandris studied Political Science and Economics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and continued her post-graduate studies in Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Frankfurt in Germany.
