AEK on Sunday became the third Greek team ever to win the FIBA Intercontinental Cup defeating their hosts, Flamengo, at Rio de Janeiro with a score of 86-70.
The Greek team climbed the ranks for the first time, becoming the third Greek club after Panathinaikos and Olympiacos to achieve the rare title win.
Flamengo posed a strong challenge to the Greek team that led 42-33 in the first half and then continued defending their lead in the second half when Flamengo soldiered on with 47-42.
AEK was more composed than the host team with a huge difference in turnovers: 20 by Flamengo and six by AEK.
Greek player Jordan Theodore scored 22 points for AEK and stood out during the game. Jonas Maciulis also scored 7 points and Delroy James added 12 points and 7 rebounds.
The victory came after AEK’s win over San Lorenzo in Friday’s semifinal.
