Truffle Hunting Begins in the Forests of Meteora

The first fortnight of March in Greece features the annual hunt for truffles in Thessaly’s region of Meteora. In an area already full of amazingly beautiful landscapes, monasteries and forests, truffles are a small yet exquisite quarry that gourmands would love to find, and the hunt adds yet another dimension to a visit there.
Visitors who have yet to bag their first truffle in the wild may go on an organized, guided truffle hunt in the lush forests near the Greek town of Kalampaka — and if they aren’t successful themselves, they can always try the delicious pasta dishes made with local truffles uncovered by specially-trained ”truffle dogs.”
A visit to Meteora, which has been distinguished by the UN as a World Heritage Site, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the senses.
Apart from viewing the spectacular, otherworldly natural vistas of monastery buildings perched atop the massive rock formations of Kalampaka, a truffle hunt can also be an alternative fun activity, offering a delicious twist to your trip.
The Natural History Museum of Meteora and a Mushroom Museum are both located in  Kalampaka, and both would be worth visiting to get a deeper appreciation of what this spectacular place has to offer.
Where to stay
For your trip to Meteora, be sure to check out the Ananti City Resort. It is an unforgettable place to stay, close to famous tourist destinations, such as Meteora, Pertouli, Elati, and Plastira Lake. And it goes without saying that the resort has breathtaking views!
Here you will find amazing service and modern comforts blended perfectly with the resort’s natural surroundings.
It offers artfully designed bedrooms, an infinity pool overlooking the city and mountains, a spa with an indoor pool, and a refined restaurant for fine dining. There is also a rooftop bar where you can relax and take in the spectacular views, as well as a fully-equipped conference center.
In all, the resort boasts 18 rooms, including three luxury suites — all impeccably designed and perfect to enjoy during every season.
An added bonus with Ananti City Resort is that you don’t even have to leave your room to enjoy the natural beauty of the land, as each room features extra-large picture windows which showcase stunning views of the city of Trikala, the Thessalian plain and the stunning mountains which surround the entire area.
