One person was injured and several cars were destroyed on Friday morning following a powerful explosion at an open-air parking lot in the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada.
The explosion occurred at around 10 AM local time (0800 GMT) when a driver started the ignition of a car.
According to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the driver has been identified as an Australian national.
The man’s driving license is said to have been issued by the United Arab Emirates, while his car’s license plates were Australian.
He has been rushed to a local hospital; however, his life is not thought to be in danger at the present time.
Authorities didn’t immediately give any other details, but confirmed that bomb squad officers were involved in the investigation of the explosion.
The fire service confirmed that four vehicles were on fire when its officers arrived on the scene.
