A tragic incident involving the death of a firefighter took place near Thessaloniki on Friday afternoon.
A 46-year old man who was a member of the fire brigade of Thessaloniki was attempting to extinguish a fire in Thessaloniki’s Kalochori area when he collapsed.
According to local media, the man lost consciousness, probably due to the thick smoke which enveloped him as he battled against the fire.
The fire was only burning dry grass and low bushes in an open area, but the smoke was very thick, apparently causing the man’s collapse.
The firefighter was declared dead after being transported to the 424th Military Hospital of Thessaloniki.
Several hours later, another firefighter experiencing respiratory problems was transported to the same hospital.
The 46-year-old firefighter who succumbed today was also the president of the firefighters’ association of Central Macedonia.
