Greek Police officials, speaking with Kathimerini newspaper on Friday claimed that sensitive Police Units face severe communication problems as the radio devices they use are faulty.
Special units of the Greek Police that guard sensitive spots in the Greek capital, such as the Maximos Mansion, which is the Government’s Headquarters, the Appeals Court of Athens and the American Embassy, use either faulty or completely non-functional radio devices, posing serious threats to the overall security of these places.
In a July 2018 report, problems with the radio communications of the Greek Police were found in many areas across the Attica region.
According to this report, ”the problem lies with the operation of the portable radios which can receive signals from the center of operations but they cannot transmit, and as a consequence officers cannot report an incident.”
The Greek Police in Athens use either radios made approximately around 2004 or a newer version bought in 2015, with both of them facing technical issues during their operation.
According to Kathimerini newspaper, these malfunctions occur due to the number of deactivated aerials around Attica, the Civil Protection Minister, Olga Gerovasili visited Barcelona, Spain to get information about the latest communications system.
