Rental Subsidy Program For Low-Income Greek Citizens Begins

The new rent-subsidy scheme for Greek citizens, which was passed last year by the Greek Parliament, came into effect on Tuesday evening.
The online platform, where thousands of Greeks will be able to upload their application, began operation operation late in the evening on Tuesday, the state-run AMNA news agency reports.
Access to the platform is controlled by the website epidomastegasis.gr, which was created by Greece’s Electronic Governance of Social Security agency (HDIKA).
“The platform will be constantly in operation to receive applications at any time,” the agency stated when the site was first put online and into operation.
Under the Joint Ministerial Decision, thousands of low-income citizens who do not own their own house will receive the allowance retroactively from January 1, 2019, provided that they had a valid lease at that date.
According to the provisions of the new program, those who are entitled to the subsidy will receive between €70 and €220 per month in state financial assistance to cover their housing expenses.
The exact amount of money they will receive depends on their personal income and other socio-economic criteria.
Similar programs exist in many EU countries; all are designed to reduce the impact of homelessness as well as to financially assist those who are in need.
