Seven more citizens died from influenza complications last week in Greece, according to the Greek Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (KEELPNO) latest figures, published on Thursday afternoon.
A total of one hundred and eighteen patients have succumbed to the infectious disease so far, since the beginning of this year’s winter flu season. This makes this winter one of the worst flu seasons in Greece’s history.
However, this week is the first week in months which has seen a significant reduction in the number of deaths, which likely signals the beginning of the end of this year’s flu season.
In KEELPNO’s previous announcement, which was issued on March 7, twenty people across Greece had succumbed to the disease. This week’s number of influenza victims showed a decrease of thirteen individuals.
KEELPNO has been updating the general public on the influenza outbreak every week over the last few months and a new announcement is expected to be made next Thursday, March 21. It is hoped that by that time, the numbers of deaths from the flu will be reduced to zero.
According to KEELPNO’s latest figures, ten more total incidents of the flu were recorded between March 4 and 10. The total number of patients who have been hospitalized in intensive care units across Greece since the beginning of the outbreak reached 340.
More than eighty-five percent of the patients who have died so far in this year’s flu outbreak were sixty years of age or older.
