Greek Model Returns to Greece After 16-Month Custody in Hong Kong

A Greek model who was cleared last week by a Hong Kong court of drug trafficking offenses returned to Greece on Wednesday.
Eirini Melissaropoulou was greeted at the Athens international airport by her lawyer and dozens of news reporters.
After being held in a jail for sixteen months, she said she now wants to return to her hometown in Lesvos and restart her life and career.
She appealed to the media to respect her privacy as well as her family’s.
The 21-year-old model was accused of knowingly carrying 2.52 kg (5.5 pounds) of cocaine in a hidden pocket sewn into her backpack when she arrived in Hong Kong from Ethiopia on November 20, 2017.
She was arrested upon her arrival at the Hong Kong airport and taken into custody immediately. She was found not guilty in her trial last week on a count of trafficking in dangerous drugs, and was subsequently released.
