Dozens of fire fighters are battling a forest fire which broke out in the Strofilia Forest in the north-west Peloponnese on Tuesday afternoon.
Regional Governor Apostolos Katsifaras says that the fire is one of the largest he has seen in recent years.
“I requested from the authorities to send fire-fighting aircraft, because without them I don’t think we can bring the fire under control,” he added.
Strofilia Forest is the biggest pine forest in Greece, with trees shaped like large umbrellas. It is part of a 22-square kilometer (8.5 square mile) national park which is part of the “Natura 2000” network and is protected under the Ramsar Convention.
With rich fauna and flora, the Strofilia Forest is a rare natural habitat which hundreds of people visit every day.
