A 27-year-old man shot to death his 4-year-old son, then turned the hunting rifle to his head and killed himself in the Halandri suburb of Athens on Sunday.
According to police, family problems are the probable cause of the man’s act, but an investigation is underway as to what actually led the man to kill his child and then himself.
The man was married to a 21-year-old Roma woman who was the mother of his child. They were living together for several years but got married only a year ago. However, the couple separated recently and the 4-year-old was living with his father.
Around 11 a.m. on Sunday, a neighbor called the police and said that the man killed his child. When the police officers arrived at the apartment, they found the father and the son dead with the hunting rifle next to the man.
Police say that the 27-year-old did not have a permit for the gun.
Shortly afterward, the young mother, who had learned what had happened arrived at the spot in a state of shock.
