Almost 1,000 Migrants Planning to Cross to Greece Held in Turkey

Turkey’s police held 950 migrants without papers in a northwestern Turkish province as they attempted to cross over into neighboring Greece, security sources disclosed on Sunday.
The migrants made a beeline to Edirne province on the night of April 4, after they were told via social media that Turkey would allow them to cross the border, said the sources quoted by the Anadolu News Agency.
After a tip-off, police and gendarmerie forces increased security measures near the border to prevent the influx of migrants.
Hundreds of migrants in northern Greece reacted last Thursday to a false alert on social media that the crossing into North Macedonia would open for them, and they clashed with Greek police as they attempted to move toward the border. Tear gas and stun grenades were used to put down the melee.
