Mykonos Garbage Dump Threatens Cosmopolitan Island (video)

Shocking footage of an illegal garbage dump in the “Metallia” area of Mykonos has cast doubts on the sustainability of trash disposal on this cosmopolitan island just before the holiday season.
Mykonos Live TV shared a video of the area where trucks and private cars have been illegally dumping every possible kind of rubbish over a period of years. The azure sea which surrounds the island is clearly visible in the background. It is not known exactly how far the dump is from the open water.
The local site says that the mountain of waste has now reached a height of 30 meters (98 feet).
The station’s report quotes environmental groups who say that dump threatens the coastal ecosystem, as contaminants from the rubbish are carried away directly into the sea after every rainfall.
Garbage disposal and recycling is now viewed as a major issue in Greece, and particularly on all the Greek islands.
