EUROPOL executive director Catherine De Bolle visited Greece’s border region of Evros on Thursday.
De Bolle wanted to see for herself the situation at the Greek-Turkish border — which also serves as an external border of the European Union itself.
The executive director visited the city of Alexandroupolis and its police headquarters, the Center for Border and Migration Management in the city, and the area where the Evros River meets the sea. The European official also toured the operational center at Nea Vyssa and viewed the fence on the border between Greece and Turkey in the Kastanies area.
De Bolle was briefed on the daily difficulties the authorities face as part of their work, due to the remote location and special geographical features of the area.
During her discussions with the authorities, special emphasis was given on strengthening collaboration between EUROPOL and the national police authorities in Greece, effectively tackling human trafficking and the prospect of placing “guest officers” in the region to conduct secondary safety checks.
Europol is the European Union’s agency for law enforcement.
