Former Opponent Becomes Tourism Minister in Greece

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Saturday named the head of Greece’s tiny Democratic Left party (DIMAR) to be Culture Minister, replacing Elena Kountoura, who resigned to contest in the European elections.
Thanasis Theocharopoulos, 40, an agricultural economist, backed SYRIZA and Tsipras’ deal for the North Macedonia name deal and has now been made a minister in this vital sector just as Greece expects another record tourism season.
The economist’s appointment was greeted with scorn by the government’s political opposition, which said he voted for the Macedonia name giveaway in order to position himself with Tsipras and SYRIZA, with DIMAR no longer a relevant political party.
