Greek Authorities Revoke License for Tall Building Near Acropolis

The Acropolis in Athens, Greece.

The Greek Ministry of Culture revoked the license for the construction of a new, multi-level building which had been planned for Athens’ Koukaki neighborhood on Monday. The tall building would have been in the shade of the holy rock of the Acropolis, the ultimate symbol of the nation of Greece.
Following widespread public outrage this Spring over the fear that a tall building would block views of the Acropolis, an inspection of the site was recently conducted by the country’s Central Archaeological Council (KAS).
The KAS, which is the main advisory body responsible for the protection of ancient sites and monuments in Greece, decided that the building would be in great disharmony with the surrounding area, which led its members to propose the revocation of its construction license.
The Ministry of Culture noted that the previously-granted license lacked any authorization from the Ministry of the Environment, which is responsible for setting limits to construction projects in Greece.
The Ministry of the Environment announced the implementation of a height limit of 17.5 meters (57.4 feet) for buildings constructed around the holy rock of the Acropolis in March of this year.
