Panathinaikos Suspends Participation in Greece's ''Basket League''

Greece’s Panathinaikos basketball team issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon informing the public that it is suspending its participation in Greece’s basketball championship “Basket League“, in its words ”until legality prevails again.”
Panathinaikos was set to play against the team of Kymi on Wednesday afternoon.

The basketball team is accusing Olympiacos BC and its directors of trying to impose on Greek basketball ”illegality and terrorism, something that the Greek authorities tolerate.”
Panathinaikos’ decision means that the Kymi team might be recorded on paper as winning the game with a score of 20-0, offering it the chance to remain in Greece’s Basket League, without being downgraded to the secondary championship.
The Athens’ basketball team statement concludes by saying that ”we have no place in a state that is a state of Olympiacos.”
The dispute escalated when approximately one hundred hooligans, who are supporters Olympiacos, visited the house of a basketball referee on Tuesday. They insulted and terrorized him just before Olympiacos’ last game against the Prometheus of Patras team on Wednesday.
The supporters of both the Panathinaikos and Olympiacos basketball teams are known for their longstanding enmity, and they are often referred to as the ”eternal rivals.”
Panathinaikos is the largest sports club in Athens and Olympiacos is the largest in the city of Piraeus.
