Andrey Maslov, the Russian Ambassador to Greece, claimed in an interview on Wednesday that the Prespa Agreement destabilizes the Balkans.
Speaking with Greece’s ERT1 channel of the public broadcasting network, the Ambassador declared that North Macedonia had been pushed into NATO by the West, an action which destabilizes the entire region of the Balkan peninsula.
Maslov denied that Russia wants the Balkans to enter the Russian sphere of influence, saying that Moscow only wants to strengthen the ties with individual Balkan countries, as long as they want this as well.
“Recently, we have been witnessing efforts of certain countries to create a new status quo that will not be based on international law, but on rules of their own making,” Maslov said, referring to Balkan nations joining NATO.
When asked about Turkish provocations in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone, Maslov used extremely diplomatic language, hoping that every side concerned will refrain from adopting actions which could escalate tensions and create new obstacles toward reaching a settlement on the divided island.
