Turkey issued a new NAVTEX (Navigational Telex) on Friday, officially blocking off the sea area south of Greece’s territorial waters within the small archipelago of Castellorizo, east of Rhodes.
Turkey intends to block off the sea area for the days of Friday, May, 10 and Saturday, May, 11, ostensibly in order to conduct a naval exercise using live ammunition.
Turkey’s No619 NAVTEX is just Ankara’s latest step in its effort to pressure Athens, Nicosia and their allies in the wider region of the eastern Mediterranean. It follows the earlier provocative action of sending its ”FATIH” vessel off the coast of Cyprus and inside the boundaries of its Exclusive Economic Zone to conduct natural gas research and drilling.
It is noted that major players in the international community have sided solidly with Nicosia, accusing Turkey of increasing tensions in the Mediterranean.
The most recent statement, issued by Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, released on Thursday, said: ”The European Union stands united behind the Republic of Cyprus and expects Turkey to respect sovereign rights of the EU member states. The European Council will continue to follow these developments closely.”
