Katerina Stefanidi and Nicole Kyriakopoulou were off to a great start in the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday, jumping 4.72m both in pole vault jumping and getting first and second place respectively.
Stefanidi was the winner of the race, reaching 4.72m without missing any effort. The world champion in London began at 4.52m, continued at 4.62m and then 4.72m, but failed her 4.77m attempt.
Kyriakopoulou followed the same course, but she made an invalid jump at 4.72 meters.
The two athletes showed early in the season that they will have a leading role and that in the following races they will be able to go higher. In 2019, Stefanidi faces a big challenge, as she will seek to defend the gold medal she won two years ago.
Kyriacopoulou wants to be on the winners’ podium in a world championship for the second time after the bronze medal she won in 2015 in Beijing.
The two women will meet again in the Diamond League to be held in Rome on June 6th.
