Greek Parliament Mulls New Penal Code

The Greek government on Monday brought forward for debate proposed legislation on the reformed penal code, which includes the reclassification of certain felonies and misdemeanors.
Some of the new or amended provisions include the following:
– The heads of criminal gangs will face stiffer penalties (with maximum sentences of up to fifteen years). This change could affect the ongoing trials of the members of neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn, among other individuals, who have already been charged with running a criminal gang.
– There would be increased sentences for crimes based on racism, and longer sentences for rape would also be allowed.
– It calls for prison time for the bribery of politicians and aligns the Greek penal code to the relevant international conventions which Greece has already signed.
– Greek laws regarding the protection of minors against sexual exploitation were also brought up to date with international law enforcement obligations.
