The special elevator that carries people with mobility problems from the entrance up to the Acropolis hill has been out of order for months, with pertinent authorities neglecting its repair.
The parents of the child on the wheelchair spoke to Newsit.gr website and thanked the people who helped them lift their son in his wheelchair after they had travelled from northern Greece to visit the monument.
The Ministry of Culture asked for the resignation of the director of the Antiquities Ephorate of the City of Athens and the head of the Department of Archaeological Works and Studies.
The officials statement that the Ministry of Culture issued on Friday says that the operation of the wheelchair lift had been considered an absolute priority for several months, as well as the overall improvement of the operation and services of the archaeological site.
“However, the response to this incident led to the resignation request due to shortcomings and a series of mistakes in managing the country’s top monument, which is also one of the most important of all mankind,” the statement concludes.
