The Greek Minister of Education decided on Monday to suspend a primary teacher on the island of Rhodes who allegedly locked a pupil in the classroom for more than twenty minutes.
The unusual incident took place last Friday in Rhodes’ 15th Primary School.
According to media reports, at the end of the school day, the teacher asked the students to leave the classroom immediately, threatening them to lock in ”whoever was left behind.”
The teacher then actually locked in one child, who shouted for help for more than twenty minutes, until he was heard by the teacher who is a German language instructor at the school.
That teacher tried to unlock the door and informed the Head Teacher, or school principal.
The parents of the nine-year old student have sued the teacher who locked their child in the schoolroom. The educator denies the charges.
The teacher reportedly told the police that he did indeed lock the child in the room, but it happened accidentally and the child didn’t stay in the classroom for more than a couple of minutes.
After the general outcry, and reports that the student even tried to get out of the classroom through a second-floor window, Education Minister Costas Gavroglou issued a statement saying that the Ministry had decided to suspend the teacher. An official investigation has now been launched.
