Opposition Leader Mitsotakis Calls for National Unity and EU Sanctions Against Turkey

Kyriakos Mitsotakis speaking with the Greek Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) on recent developments on Cyprus

Greece’s Leader of the Opposition Kyriakos Mitsotakis issued a video statement on Monday afternoon commenting on the recent developments between the nations of Cyprus, Greece and Turkey.
The leader of the New Democracy Party said that for several months now, Turkey has shown an absolute disdain for international law by constantly violating the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.
For this reason, Mitsotakis said, ”it is absolutely bounden for Greece and Cyprus to ask from the European Union to impose sanctions against Turkey.”
Mitsotakis emphasized that during this crucial time, it is necessary for Greece to maintain its national unity and determination.
The opposition leader noted, however, that Tsipras’ decision to call an extraordinary meeting of the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA) on Sunday evening did not help Greece’s national stance on the issue.
It is noted that PM Tsipras and President Anastasiades of Cyprus decided to coordinate their steps ahead of the European Union’s summit next week to push their EU partners to penalize Turkey. This may include the possible option of sanctions, if it can be proven that Ankara has begun drilling for gas west of the island of Cyprus.
