Joy Returns to Greek Orphanage Destroyed in Deadly Fire of 2018

The Lyrio Childrens Foundation, an orphanage based in the village of Neos Voutzas which was destroyed in the deadly fires in east Attica in July of 2018, opened its doors again on Sunday to conduct the wedding ceremony of a former student.
“Through the ashes of last year, a new hopeful life is born,” declared a spokesman for the Holy Metropolis of Kifissia, in whose jurisdiction the church of the Lyrio Children’s Foundation belongs.
According to the Metropolis, Olga, the young lady who had her beautiful wedding ceremony in the orphanage’s ornate church, is one of the dozens of children who grew up at the orphanage.

The Lyrio Childrens Foundation, founded in 1969, describes itself as a model Orthodox orphanage, where “a few devoted nuns care for, raise and educate children who have fewer opportunities in their lives.”
Its purpose is to provide free shelter, health care and education to unprotected children, who are left without their parents either because they are not alive or because they are facing serious family, economic or social problems.
Its main building was completely gutted in last July’s deadly wildfires in east Attica, Greece, leaving a burned-out, blackened hulk.
