Last weekend a cliff diving show took place in the breathtaking natural landscape of Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos, Crete.
The “Agios Nikolaos Cliff Diving” event allowed 18 international cliff divers, 12 men and six women, to show off their twists and somersaults, at the twenty-meter diving level.
The organizers of this wonderful competition are the municipality of Agios Nikolaos, the Region of Crete, and Infinite Drop High Diving. The show began on Friday and ended on Sunday with the finals.
This sporting and cultural show was held for the 4th consecutive year, not only gathering locals, but also 10,000-15,000 tourists and holidaymakers from all over the world.
This year’s MC was George Mavridis who is well-known and beloved by the Greek television audience, while the jury honored the presence of Olympic gold medalist of Athens in 2004 in the synchronized three-meter dive, Nikolaos Siranidis.
The ceremony ended with the harmonious dive of all the athletes from the rocks of the lake and colorful fireworks.
The crowned winner of the “Agios Nikolaos CliffDiving 2019” was 20-year-old British Owen Weimouth. 23-year-old American Eleanor Smart won third place among the six women that competed.
Awards were not handed out at the closing ceremony, but much later at Ammoudi beach with traditional Cretan mezedes, frozen beers, dancing, farewells, and giving “thank you” speeches with eyes filled with tears.
The athletes, organizers, and volunteers all plan to return in the summer of 2020.
