Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis won a vote of confidence in Parliament on Monday night, two weeks after the national elections which were held on July 7.
Mitsotakis’ government received 158 votes from a total of 300 cast, allowing it to create the first one-party government in Greece since 2009.
The vote of confidence in the new conservative government was held by a roll-call vote at midnight, following the conclusion of a three-day presentation of the government’s policy platform.
Prior to the vote, there was a round of speeches by leaders of the parliamentary groups in reverse order relative to their party’s strength in parliament, culminating in a speech by the new prime minister.
The party leaders who spoke included the Secretary of the left-wing MeRa25 party, former Finance Minister Yianis Varoufakis; the President of the extreme-right Greek Solution party, Kyriakos Velopoulos; Dimitris Koutsoumpas, the Secretary General of the Communist Party of Greece; the President of the center-left Movement for Change (KINAL) party Fofi Gennimata; and the leader of the main opposition, ex-Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
Monday’s session began at 9:30 in the morning local time, with speeches by ministers and deputy ministers laying out their respective portfolios, along with those made by MPs from all the parties in Greece.
