New Greek Government to Abolish Selecting Flag-Bearers by Draw

The new conservative government announced on Tuesday its intention to radically overhaul primary and secondary education in Greece, including the abolition of the controversial measure introduced by the previous leftist administration to pick flag-bearers by draw.
Niki Kerameus, Greece’s new Minister for Education, will bring forth new legislation which reintroduces the previous procedure, according to which flag-bearers in school parades are selected from the best pupils.
There were fierce reactions from opposition parties, especially the conservative New Democracy Party, when SYRIZA introduced the changes in 2017.
The argument was that carrying the flag is a great honor, and students should work hard to be the best in order to bear the nation’s colors.
The argument of the leftist government was that each student, regardless of their grades or ethnicity, should have the opportunity to bear the flag.
According to reports, the new minister will also reintroduce end-of-the-year exams, which had also been abolished by the previous administration, throughout secondary schools in Greece.
