Mayor of Overcrowded Mykonos Pleas for Additional Police Officers

Mykonos is flooded with tourists each and every summer — and although this is expected, there are still not enough police officers to handle the overwhelming crowds. The situation has come to such a head that Mayor Dimitris Tzanos sent a letter on July 26 asking for additional officers to be dispatched to the island.
In his urgent letter to Greece’s new Citizens Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis, Tzanos explained that Mykonos’ police force is too small and not adequately equipped to deal with the growing number of tourists or the rising crime rate on the island.
Tzanos warned that the police force of the island is “tragically understaffed” and is unable to deal with the growth of drug-related offenses, thefts, violence, and burglaries, according to a report by the newspaper Kathimerini concerning the growing issues.
The mayor’s letter, which was published on the Huffington Post Greece website, requested  more officers as well as a minimum of two units from the Greek Police’s OPKE force, which specializes in more serious crimes.
Tzanos added that funds were already set aside by the municipal authority to cover the officers’ costs of living on the cosmopolitan island.
The island of Mykonos “feels abandoned by the state,” the mayor stated, who also said that previous requests for help sent to SYRIZA, the Radical Left party which was in power until July 7, had been ignored.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the new prime minister and leader of the New Democracy party, has claimed publicly that, unlike SYRIZA, he will not accept violence and lawlessness in Greece.
However, after winning the snap elections on July 7, the premier has primarily focused on re-establishing law and order in Athens and Attica in his first few weeks in power.
