Greek Government to Introduce Tax Incentives for Buying Helmets

The Greek government will introduce tax incentives to encourage motorcycle drivers to buy and use helmets, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated on Thursday, during his visit to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
When speaking to reporters at the Ministry, Mitsotakis noted that he will not accept any deviation from the obligatory use of helmets on motorcycles, and added that his government places high priority on road safety.
“It is unacceptable to have so many people die in traffic accidents,” the premier said. He noted that his administration will be enforcing existing laws and introducing new legislation   relative to “how we teach new drivers, the quality of our roads, and, obviously, the very strict enforcement of the traffic regulations code.”

Speaking on urban transport in Athens and Thessaloniki, the prime minister said he expects the ministry leadership to “do whatever they can” to increase Athens’ bus schedules, and do the same for the buses of Thessaloniki.
Expressing confidence in the ministry staff, Mitsotakis noted that “they are handling a portfolio that is absolutely critical for citizens’ daily lives and for the country’s large-scale development opportunities.”
Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis said the state of transportation in the country’s capital “is especially unacceptable in the metro,” citing great delays with subway trains currently.
“At a recent visit to the metro, the ministry leadership saw that delays are huge and that a third of the trains are not running” due to maintenance issues and drivers’ summer holidays, Karamanlis added.
