The Areos Pagos, Greece’s supreme court, requested a copy of the court ruling on the case of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos on Friday. The fifteen-year-old demonstrator was murdered in Exarchia in December, 2008 by police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas.
The murder sparked city-wide riots at the time, and the unrest spread to other cities across Greece.
The Supreme Court chief prosecutor’s office would like to review the decision that was made to free former policeman Korkoneas, who was initially sentenced to life imprisonment for premeditated murder.
An appeals court recognized Korkoneas’ record of good behavior as mitigating circumstances, and shortened his sentence to 13 years’ imprisonment. He was released from prison last week, having served his sentence with good conduct.
If the Supreme Court decides to overturn the ruling of the Court of Appeals in Lamia, central Greece, he will undergo another trial for the killing of Grigoropoulos.
