President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mustafa Akinci, met on Friday morning in Nicosia, Cyprus.
The leaders of the two main ethnic communities of Cyprus mutually pledged to continue engaging in efforts to finalize the UN Secretary General’s Terms of Reference for an effective dialogue.
They also announced after their meeting, which took place at the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia, that they will hold a tripartite meeting after the UN General Assembly.
A statement issued by the United Nations spokesperson for Cyprus on behalf of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders following their meeting, said that they also welcomed the implementation of the confidence building measures they had proposed at their February meeting.
Anastasiades and Akinci also gave assurances that they will work to intensify the efforts made by the technical committees.
The statement said that the two leaders ”met at the Chief of Mission’s residence in the United Nations Protected Area under the auspices of Special Representative and Deputy Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Ms. Elizabeth Spehar.”
This is the second informal meeting undertaken by the two leaders in 2019, and is part of an ongoing effort to revive the prospects of solving the long-standing Cyprus issue.
